Atlanta Native Gives Back to Community in a Major Way
Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum rapper, and Atlanta native 21 Savage hosted the fifth annual "Issa Back 2 School Drive" on August 15, 2020, presented by 21 Savage's Leading By Example Foundation, in partnership with Chime, Juma.org and Black Voters Matter and M.O.B.B. (March On Ballot Boxes).
Chime is a leading U.S. provider of mobile banking services that helps members avoid traditional bank fees, save money automatically, and achieve financial peace of mind. Juma is a prominent financial literacy national organization in its third year of partnership with 21 Savage, for the 21 Savage Bank Account Campaign, together they are providing financial literacy workshops and job placement resources for youth in Atlanta.
At this event, Chrome tablets and free Wi-Fi were provided to the first 100 families, which included a yearlong subscription for the rest of the school year, facemasks, school supplies, and a financial literacy toolkit. Guests over 18 will be able to register to vote through Black Voters Matter Fund, in partnership with M.O.B.B. Contactless voter registration will be provided as well as paper registration forms for those without official Georgia IDs. This drive comes on the heels of the success of 21 Savage's national "Bank Account at Home" Chime X 21 Savage initiative launched in July, offering free financial literacy lessons to youth nationwide in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the public relations representative for the annual back to school drive, when asked what is the inspiration behind putting together an event such as this, Anisa Green said, "Savage gives back to his community every year. He wants to make sure that touches his community," she said. "It was a little difficult due to the pandemic, but it is such a blessing to see a celebrity support the area he grew up in."
The generous donation comes just in time, ahead of DeKalb County's new school year, which started August 17, 2020. Five hundred plus families were supported at this event.
