JoJo is New and Improved and Back on the Scene with a New Album
Though still amid Covid-19, there is no shortage of great music releases. Joanna Levesque, known professionally as JoJo, premiered her newest album, Good to Know, at midnight on Friday, May 1.
Introduced to the industry in 2004 at the age of 13 with her single “Leave (Get Out),” JoJo appealed to her audience with a voice that had range and maturity far beyond her age. At such a tender age, the young songstress was effortless, hitting runs and intervals that gave off vibes similar to some of R&B’s heavy hitters, like Brandy and Toni Braxton. And her accomplishments speak for themselves because she was also the youngest solo artist to ever have a number one record in the country.
Now, 16 years later, after her debut, JoJo is back on the scene and ready to give a more authentic version of herself. The 9-track album, which features Tory Lanez and 30 Roc, is the singer’s fourth studio album. Jojo dealt with a battle with Atlantic Records for many years, and it resulted in her having to re-record her album. With her label troubles far behind her now, she is free to do what she does best: steal our hearts again with her beautiful voice.
According to an interview with NPR, when asked about her project’s new inspiration, JoJo said, “I made this album from where I was at,” she says. “I was on a journey, wanting to accept myself and not keep running away from being alone” (Janaya Williams, 2020).
Jojo un-apologetically expressed her newly found independence in her single “Man.” Her journey to affirming herself came from her struggle with clinical depression. However, she now openly talks about her mental health and how she currently manages that through therapy, medication, as well as exercise, yoga, and journaling.
In her song “Proud,” Jojo recalls the happier space she now finds herself in. As reported by Jeff Nelson (2020) in People magazine, Jojo said, “I'm really excited for 30, because I hear it gets better," she says. "My 20s were just about seeking approval. Now, if I approve of myself, that's all I need. That confidence real reverberates. It's Powerful.
